Northwest Expedition – Hidden Trails of Sapa & Beyond Itinerary

We kick off the adventure with a scenic ride from Hanoi toward the lush valley of Mai Chau. The route takes us through winding mountain roads and over the stunning Thung Khe Pass, where panoramic views of misty limestone peaks and green valleys stretch endlessly below.

Stop for local snacks and photos before descending into Mai Chau — a peaceful valley surrounded by rice paddies and traditional stilt houses of the White Thai people. In the evening, enjoy local food, rice wine, and perhaps a traditional dance performance.

Accommodation: Hotel

Meals: Lunch, Dinner

Today’s ride follows quiet backroads through charming rural scenes, crossing rivers and rolling hills dotted with tea plantations. We take a local ferry across the Da River, a highlight in itself, before climbing the winding Hua Tat Pass — a forgotten gem offering stunning mountain and valley views.

Along the way, you’ll meet friendly villagers, see daily life unfold, and ride through landscapes where nature remains wild and untouched. Phu Yen welcomes us with peaceful charm and the warmth of local hospitality.

Today’s ride takes us along the epic Dinosaur Backbone Ridge, winding through Trạm Tấu and venturing onto off-road and backroad trails that showcase the northern highlands in all their glory. Stop for panoramic views of terraced rice fields before crossing the famous Khau Phạ Pass, one of Vietnam’s “Four Great Passes.”

Continue to La Pán Tẩn and Mu Cang Chai, riding through the heart of the region’s world-famous terraces framed by towering mountains and lush valleys. This is a day full of challenging curves, breathtaking scenery, and pure riding joy.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Leaving the terraces behind, we ride through hidden valleys and winding roads that cut through ethnic villages before tackling the legendary O Quy Ho Pass — the gateway to Sapa. At over 2,000 meters, this is one of Vietnam’s highest and most dramatic mountain routes, offering spectacular views of Fansipan, the “Roof of Indochina.”

Descend into the misty valley of Sapa, a town renowned for its rugged beauty and vibrant culture. Visit Hmong, Dao, and Tay villages, interact with locals, and soak in the highland atmosphere. The combination of mountain riding, cultural encounters, and breathtaking vistas makes this day a highlight of the entire journey.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We leave Sapa behind and descend toward Thac Ba Lake, Vietnam’s largest man-made lake surrounded by green hills and palm-covered roads. The route includes scenic backroads and occasional off-road sections passing through remote villages and tea plantations.

By afternoon, we reach Vu Linh, a peaceful Dao village by the lake. Our hosts welcome us with open arms, delicious home-cooked food, and local rice wine. Tonight is all about sharing stories, laughter, and the warmth of true Vietnamese hospitality.

Accommodation: Homestay

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

After breakfast, take a short walk along the lake before our final stretch back to Hanoi. The road winds through tea hills, quiet villages, and gentle mountain scenery, offering a peaceful finale to our Northwest expedition.

As we roll back into the capital, we carry memories of the open road — the scent of the forest, the laughter of villagers, and the thrill of conquering Vietnam’s legendary mountain trails.

King took my partner and I on the My Son loop. Amazing experience. Good amount of off roading. Got to see and feel some traditional vietnamese culture. The bike was in good condition and had plenty of power. King gave us ample time to explore My Son Temple. He was patient and informative. Highky recommend. Thankyou!

Highly recommended! Lona is incredibly kind, honest, and professional, which made the whole process smooth and stress-free. We rented a bike for 20 days and the experience was perfect from start to finish. The prices are very fair and a huge plus was the one-way rental option. Being able to drop off the bike at a different location was a total game changer for our trip. If you’re looking for a reliable bike and great service, this is the place!

We were so lucky to do a 6 day tour of the Ha Giang loop together with King. He knew every pathway and was a great guide. Also a great guy who's really funny. For me it was the first time doing off-road riding and he really kept that into account whilst still giving me lots of options to try new things. I learned a lot whilst driving though the beautiful countryside and mountains of Vietnam! The roads and views were amazing and I 1000% recommend! Thank you King 🏍️💨 🫶🏻
