This Vietnam Grand Motorcycle Expedition 19-day motorcycle expedition is the ultimate ride through Vietnam — from the ancient streets of Hoi An to the vibrant capital, Hanoi.

Along the way, you’ll experience the country’s full diversity: coastal curves, wartime landmarks, jungle trails, high mountain passes, and the breathtaking limestone bays of the North.

Starting in Hoi An, we cross the iconic Hai Van Pass to reach Hue, then follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail through the Vietnam DMZ, Khe Sanh, and Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, home to one of the world’s most impressive cave systems

From the central mountains, the adventure continues deep into the northern highlands — traversing off-road tracks and hidden valleys of Pu Luong, Moc Chau, Tram Tau, and Mu Cang Chai, before reaching the misty peaks and ethnic heartlands of Sapa.

Our northern loop leads through the emerald waters of Ba Be Lake, ancient French-built tunnels, and the striking Mat Than Mountain (Eye of the Mountain) before reaching the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall. The final days bring pure serenity — a night aboard a luxury cruise in Ha Long Bay, surrounded by thousands of limestone islands, before riding back to Hanoi, where this epic journey concludes.

Itinerary

We begin our epic adventure from the charming ancient town of Hoi An, heading north along Vietnam’s most scenic coastal road. Our first stop is the Cham Tower, an 11th-century relic that stands as a silent witness to the glorious past of the Champa Kingdom.

Next, we conquer the legendary Hai Van Pass, where we’ll take plenty of time to stop for photos, enjoy a coffee, and breathe in the refreshing ocean breeze. Continuing along the coast, we ride through small fishing villages and along the Tam Giang Lagoon. Along the way, we’ll visit the famous “City of Tombs,” marveling at its lavish architecture.

We wrap up the day in the imperial city of Hue, home to ancient temples, royal tombs, and the majestic Citadel.

Leaving Hue, we follow quiet countryside roads, crossing the Tam Giang Lagoon by local ferry — a perfect glimpse of coastal village life. We continue along backroads through rice fields before reaching the former DMZ.

We stop at the Vinh Moc Tunnels, where local families once lived underground during wartime — a haunting and fascinating glimpse into life in the tunnels. Next, we visit the Hien Luong Bridge and Ben Hai River, once marking the 17th parallel dividing North and South Vietnam.

Riding along Vỹ Tuyến Road, we reach the Truong Son Martyrs’ Cemetery, honoring thousands of soldiers who sacrificed their lives, and visit the “House of Bombs,” built from massive wartime bombs.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Khe Sanh, a key American base during the Vietnam War, and relax with a cold drink in this historic mountain town.

We begin the day along the legendary Ho Chi Minh Trail, stopping first at Ta Con Airfield, a wartime site where remnants of the old military base tell the story of fierce battles.

We reach Phong Nha by late afternoon, then board the boat trip exploring Phong Nha Cave, marveling at its towering stalactites and crystal-clear waters. Later, we settle into our accommodation amid karst peaks and lush greenery for a relaxing evening.

Today we ride north along the old trail near the Vietnam–Laos border, stopping to explore remnants of wartime airfields and other military landmarks that tell the story of past battles. We also visit the scenic Thanh Chuong Tea Island, a hidden gem nestled in the lush countryside.

Along the way, we take coffee breaks and observe local life unfolding in this remote region. By late afternoon, we arrive in Anh Son, a peaceful rural town surrounded by green valleys and rice fields.

From Anh Son, we make our way into the heart of northern Vietnam — crossing into Thanh Hoa province and the stunning Pu Luong Nature Reserve. The ride takes us through mountain passes, traditional Thai villages, and endless rice terraces that shimmer in the sunlight.

We’ll arrive in Pu Luong in the late afternoon, just in time to relax at a homestay or eco-lodge overlooking the valley. Enjoy the sounds of nature, local cuisine, and the cool mountain air after a long day’s ride.

Today we enjoy plenty of singletrack and dirt roads as we pass through remote areas inhabited by the Hmong tribes. The locals, dressed in their colorful traditional attire, offer perfect opportunities for souvenir photos before we continue our journey. Some roads are steep and thrilling, creating unforgettable memories along the way.

As we ride through the forests, you’ll be overwhelmed by the beauty of northwestern Vietnam. If it’s the right season, blooming flowers add an even more appealing and romantic touch to the scenery.

After saying goodbye to our friendly hosts in Moc Chau, along the way you’ll be amazed by the scenery: high peaks on one side, valleys filled with plum trees on the other. We cross the Da River by a local ferry. The route takes us through Ta Xùa, where we embark on an exhilarating day of off-road adventure, famous for its rolling mountains, misty valleys, and thrilling winding trails that will excite any rider, before descending toward Tram Tau, where a cold beer awaits as a perfect reward!

Today we venture deeper into the remote regions of the Hmong and Dao minority villages. Make sure your cameras are ready – the locals in their vibrant traditional attire, combined with the picturesque villages and mountainous backdrop, create unforgettable sights.

One of the highlights of the day is Khau Phạ Pass, offering breathtaking panoramic views of terraced rice fields that stretch across the mountains. This legendary route challenges riders with steep climbs, tight twists, and technical off-road trails, rewarding you with some of the most scenic landscapes in Northern Vietnam.

The ride is challenging but incredibly rewarding, making it a truly memorable day on the bike.

We ride through lush forests and tea plantations across the highlands, tackling numerous mountain passes, including the legendary O Quy Ho Pass, famously called “Heaven’s Gate,” with breathtaking panoramic views.

Before descending into Sapa valley, we admire the spectacular terraced rice fields, some of the most beautiful in Northern Vietnam. After 9 exhilarating days on the road, today is a free day to explore Sapa at your own pace. Guests can choose to take the cable car to Fansipan Peak (extra cost) for panoramic views from the “Roof of Indochina,” or ride through Muong Hoa Valley to discover terraced rice fields, traditional villages, and meet local Hmong, Giay, Tay, and Dao communities.

For those preferring a gentler day, a stroll through Sapa town or a short hike up Ham Rong Peak reveals sweeping views of the valleys and surrounding mountains. Lunch is on your own, giving you the chance to try local specialties at your leisure. In the evening, the group gathers for a shared dinner, a perfect time to recount the day’s adventures, share stories, and enjoy the warm hospitality of Sapa.

Leaving Sapa, we embark on a scenic journey toward Bac Ha, taking the backroads through Si Ma Cai along the winding China border. The route offers breathtaking views of terraced rice fields, misty valleys, and limestone peaks. We ride through remote Hmong and Tay villages, where time seems to stand still. Upon reaching Bac Ha, explore the bustling local market (Sunday market or daily version), where colorful ethnic groups trade handicrafts, textiles, and local delicacies. It’s a day rich in culture, photography, and unforgettable northern landscapes.

After breakfast, we leave Bac Ha and ride toward Ha Giang, venturing along picturesque backroads through Xin Man and Hoang Su Phi. Today marks one of the most memorable sections of the tour. From Ha Giang, we take the hidden border trails leading toward Dong Van, crossing high mountain passes and remote ethnic villages. The route winds through rugged limestone peaks, corn terraces, and rocky single tracks with endless viewpoints over misty valleys. The off-road adventure brings us deep into the heart of Ha Giang’s untouched beauty. In the late afternoon, we reach Dong Van, a historic highland town where guests can wander through old Hmong-style houses and experience the local charm.

We begin the day with a ride over the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass, one of Vietnam’s most stunning mountain roads. The emerald Nho Que River flows far below, carving its way through towering limestone cliffs. Today’s ride is one of the most thrilling of the journey, taking us deep into northern Vietnam’s hidden wilderness.

We leave Ba Be National Park and follow winding jungle trails through remote ethnic villages, tackling narrow dirt tracks and river crossings that excite every rider. As we approach Cao Bang, we stop at Mat Than Mountain (God’s Eye Mountain), an incredible limestone peak with a natural circular hole, followed by a visit to Nguom Ngao Cave, famous for its giant stalactites and winding chambers.

By late afternoon, we arrive at the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall on the Vietnam–China border, where cascading water, mist, and karst cliffs create an unforgettable scene.

Wake up to the soothing sounds of nature before exploring the majestic Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of Vietnam’s greatest natural wonders. The falls tumble across multiple tiers into a jade-green pool, right on the Vietnam–China border. Take your time to capture photos or enjoy a bamboo raft ride that brings you closer to the roaring cascade.

After soaking in the scenery, we set off toward Bac Son Valley, following winding country roads through peaceful villages and scenic karst landscapes. Stop for lunch at a local eatery, then continue through rolling hills and rice paddies that stretch endlessly into the horizon.

By late afternoon, we arrive in Bac Son, a picturesque valley surrounded by limestone mountains. Adventurous riders can hike Na Lay Peak for a stunning sunset panorama, while others may simply relax at the homestay, sharing stories and cold beers after another unforgettable day.

Leaving the tranquil Bac Son Valley early, we ride toward the coast, transitioning from mountain passes to open countryside and fishing villages.

By early afternoon, we arrive at Tuan Chau or Hon Gai Pier, where our overnight 4 cruise awaits.

Board the cruise and enjoy a welcome drink as we sail into the heart of Ha Long Bay, surrounded by thousands of towering limestone islands.

In the afternoon, visit a hidden cave or take a kayak through quiet lagoons.
