Ride the Roof of Vietnam – Northwest Adventure

After meeting your guide, we leave Hanoi and head toward Hoa Binh. The first day is challenging, but the ride to Pu Luong is one of the highlights of this motorbike tour. We branch off onto smaller roads that wind through hills and villages, following the scenic Black River (much more beautiful than its name suggests!). Along the way, you’ll experience peaceful backroads, green mountains, and terraced rice fields.

In the afternoon, we hit the trails and carve through lush forests to reach Pu Luong Valley. Tonight, we stay in a stilt house with a local family—a beautiful setting that feels a world away from the city we left behind.

Today we enjoy plenty of singletrack and dirt roads as we pass through remote areas inhabited by the Hmong tribes. The locals, dressed in their colorful traditional attire, offer perfect opportunities for souvenir photos before we continue our journey. Some roads are steep and thrilling, creating unforgettable memories along the way.

As we ride through the forests, you’ll be overwhelmed by the beauty of northwestern Vietnam. If it’s the right season, blooming flowers add an even more appealing and romantic touch to the scenery.

Today’s ride is pure adventure — a thrilling blend of off-road mountain tracks, raw wilderness, and authentic tribal life. From Phu Yen, we climb steeply into the legendary Ta Xua range, where clouds drift across endless ridgelines. This is a dreamland for riders who love off-road challenges: narrow dirt paths, rocky ascents, and sweeping views above the sea of clouds — Vietnam’s famous “cloud-hunting” region.

From the peaks of Ta Xua, we descend into remote valleys toward Hang Chu, a tiny settlement tucked deep in the hills where few travelers ever pass. After crossing the Da River by a small local ferry, we continue along rugged trails carved naturally through mountains by local villagers — routes untouched by mass tourism.

By afternoon, we reach the mysterious Ban Tham Cave (Hang Bản Thẳm), a hidden limestone chamber surrounded by forest and folklore. The final stretch climbs toward the Son La plateau, where cooler air greets us after a long, rewarding day in the saddle.

After breakfast, we leave Son La and ride northwest into the highlands — a region of sweeping valleys, twisting ridgelines, and scattered Black Thai villages. Expect a day of pure mountain riding, with alternating paved and dirt sections that keep every kilometer exciting.

By midday, we tackle the legendary Pha Din Pass, one of Vietnam’s most iconic mountain passes. At the summit, the panorama stretches endlessly — terraced hillsides, distant valleys, and layers of mist rolling through the peaks.

Descending toward Dien Bien Phu, we enter the Muong Thanh Valley, a place steeped in history. Before sunset, we visit several key battle relics — the old French bunker, A1 Hill, and the museum — to learn about one of the most decisive moments in Vietnam’s struggle for independence.

This morning, we’ll enjoy a relaxed breakfast before setting off on one of the most breathtaking rides of the journey. The road from Dien Bien to Lai Chau is wild and remote, threading through a series of untouched mountain passes and dense jungle valleys rarely seen by tourists.

We’ll cross small rivers, navigate hidden backroads, and encounter Hmong and Thai villagers going about their daily lives in timeless mountain settings. Each turn offers something new — from emerald hillsides to tea plantations and cascading rice terraces.

As we descend into the broad Lai Chau valley by late afternoon, the golden light paints the mountains behind us — a fitting reward after a long day of exploration.

Get ready for a legendary day in the mountains! From Lai Chau, we follow a spectacular route that climbs high into the Hoang Lien Son range — home to Vietnam’s tallest peaks. The ride winds through lush valleys, tea-covered hills, and remote villages before we begin our ascent to the famous O Quy Ho Pass, one of the highest and most dramatic mountain passes in the country.

As we climb, the temperature drops and the scenery transforms — clouds swirl around jagged cliffs, and the air fills with the scent of pine and cool mist. Every curve reveals another breathtaking panorama, offering countless photo stops along the way.

By early afternoon, we reach Sapa, the legendary hill town perched among rice terraces and cloud forests. After lunch, take time to explore the town’s vibrant streets or enjoy a short ride to nearby villages like Ta Van or Lao Chai, where you can experience the daily life of the Hmong and Giay people amid terraced landscapes.

We leave Sapa after breakfast and descend into a world of terraced rice valleys, bamboo forests, and winding mountain backroads. The morning ride takes us through Muong Hoa and into quieter highland routes where Hmong, Dao, and Tay communities live in scattered hillside villages. Expect flowing curves, lush green valleys, and plenty of photo stops as the landscape opens up.

Around midday, we ride deeper into rural countryside on peaceful backroads — a beautiful transition from rugged mountains to rolling lowlands. Small stilt-house villages, local markets, and farmland scenes make this one of the most relaxing yet rewarding rides of the journey.

In the afternoon, the route leads us toward Thac Ba Lake, one of Vietnam’s largest and most atmospheric freshwater lakes. We ride along quiet lakeside trails before reaching Vu Linh, a traditional Dao village nestled by the water.

Upon arrival, settle into a charming lakeside homestay and enjoy the peaceful scenery — still water, soft sunset colors, and the warm hospitality of the local Dao family. Dinner is usually a home-cooked feast with fresh lake fish, herbs, and rice wine brewed right in the village.

Wake up to the peaceful sound of water lapping against the shore and the gentle rhythm of village life. After breakfast, we say goodbye to our Dao hosts and begin the final ride back to Hanoi.

The morning ride follows small countryside backroads skirting the edge of Thac Ba Lake, offering tranquil views of fishermen gliding across the water and farmers tending to their fields. From here, we weave through a patchwork of tea plantations and rural valleys, a refreshing contrast to the rugged mountains of previous days.

As we approach the Red River Delta, the terrain flattens and the traffic grows busier — a reminder that civilization is near. Still, even this last stretch holds charm, passing through quiet local towns and rice paddies shimmering under the sun.

We roll into Hanoi by mid-afternoon, completing our unforgettable 8-day Northern Vietnam adventure – a journey of mountains, culture, off-road trails, and friendships forged on the open road.
